Hongyi grew up in Beijing, China. He received a BS in chemistry from Purdue University in 2018. During his undergraduate studies, Hongyi worked on building polypseudorotaxanes from cationic polymer with cucurbit[7]uril for controlled antibacterial activity and synthesized organic semiconducting polymers for fabricating and characterizing organic field-effect transistors. He is now co-advised by Professors Stuart Rowan and Shrayesh Patel.
