Study of the dipolar XY model using arrays of Rydberg atoms

This talk will present our implementation of the dipolar XY spin model using a Rydberg simulator where the atoms are coupled by the resonant dipole interactions (see Fig.1). We use our ability to address individual atoms in the arrays to first adiabatically prepare and study the properties of the 2D square dipolar XY ground state (known as the Antiferromagnetic state AFM) and of the highest energy state (Ferromagnetic state FM) [1]. We then show that the dipolar XY model can produce scalable spin-squeezing states interesting for metrological purposes [2]. Finally, we perform quench spectroscopy experiments to probe the dispersion relation of the XY magnets [3], both in 1 or 2D and in the AFM and FM case [4]. Our studies can be generalized to any system exhibiting dipolar interaction, such as ultra-cold molecules, magnetic atoms or solid-state spin defects. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of work in progress and prospects for new projects.
