Julian Solway served full terms on the NHLBI HLBP (program project grant review) and NIH/CSR Respiratory and Applied Physiology Study Sections, and was deputy editor of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
Honors include election to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians, receipt of the American College of Physicians–American Society of Internal Medicine Award for Outstanding Work in Science as Related to Medicine, and the Joseph R. Rodarte Award for Scientific Distinction from the American Thoracic Society Respiratory Structure and Function (ATS RSF) Assembly, and receipt of the UChicago Department of Medicine’s Arthur H. Rubenstein Mentorship Award. He has held national leadership roles as president of the ATS RSF Assembly and co-chair of the National CTSA Consortium Steering Committee.
He received a BS from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his MD from Harvard University, subsequently completing residency and a pulmonary research fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Julian Solway, MD, is the Walter L. Palmer Distinguished Service Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Chicago. As Associate Dean for Translational Medicine, he directs the University of Chicago's Institute for Translational Medicine and its NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA). He founded and chairs the Committee on Molecular Medicine, an academic unit that together with the Department of Pathology delivers the Graduate Program in Molecular Pathogenesis and Molecular Medicine. He is also Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine.
Dr. Solway’s research program has been supported for 28 years by individual and program grants from NIH, and by grants from the Whitaker and Parker B. Francis Foundations, the Sandler Program for Asthma Research, and industry sources. He is considered an authority on asthma, known for his breadth of knowledge and experience ranging from respiratory mechanics and computational modeling to cell and molecular physiology. His research program includes cell-based, animal-based, and human-based studies of asthma genetics and mechanisms of airway constrictor hyperresponsiveness, and addresses the molecular regulation of airway smooth muscle structure and function.
Most recently, Dr. Solway has been PI or multiple PI on an R01 focused on HLA-G – LILRB – SHP2 signaling in airway smooth muscle, a P50 Center for Advanced Diagnostics and Therapeutics to find small molecule inhibitors of smooth muscle myosin polymerization, and an AsthmaNet Clinical Trial Network Clinical Site, all from NHLBI. He was founding director of the University of Chicago Asthma and COPD Center, an outreach, education, and research coordination organization with broad participation across many University departments and divisions, the residents of the South Side Community, and other Chicago community organizations, including the Chicago Public Schools. He is highly committed to research training, and has served as director of two NHLBI-sponsored training programs (T32 and K12) centered on lung health. He remains clinically active, providing inpatient pulmonary consultations and reading pulmonary function tests.
