The University of Chicago is one of the top 10 institutions across the globe for quantum research, and the top in the United States.
Nature magazine’s 2025 Nature Index put UChicago at #6 globally and #1 domestically in its “World’s top 10 institutions for quantum physics” list, with UChicago’s quantum research output, centered at UChicago Pritzker Molecular Engineering, outpacing MIT and Harvard. It also lists UChicago's Chicago Quantum Exchange as an important element.
Institutional rankings in the Nature Index reflect institutions’ Share metric, and article count for quantum physics-related research in Nature Index journals from March 1, 2024 to Feb. 28, 2025.
“The University of Chicago in Illinois is the first US institution to appear in the Nature Index’s top 10 quantum-physics ranking,” the article reads in part. “It has strong domestic ties, and access to facilities such as the Fermilab Accelerator Laboratory, located nearby.”
2025 International Year of Quantum Science and Technology

The United Nations declared 2025 the International Year of Quantum to mark a century of progress in quantum science and engineering. The University of Chicago and its partners join the celebration of the groundbreaking fields that continue to positively impact lives around the world.
