PME Distinguished Colloquium Series Seminar - Dr. Harris Wang

- When:
- Wednesday, May 18, 2022 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
- Where:
- ERC 161 and Zoom
- Speaker:
- Dr. Harris Wang Associate Professor of Systems Biology, Columbia University
- Description:
Synthetic biology offers the opportunity to rewrite biological systems with new properties and capabilities. Better tools to study and alter microbiomes are essential for unlocking their vast potential to improve human health and the environment. Augmenting eukaryotic organisms with new metabolisms can enhance their viability and resiliency in the face of climate change. This talk will describe our recent efforts to engineer microbial communities and mammalian cells for different application areas.

In particular, I will discuss platforms for in situ programming and recording of the gut microbiome using new CRISPR systems, bioprospecting soil-associated bacteria to build engineered living
materials, and resurrecting amino acid biosynthesis pathways in the metazoan lineage. These enabling capabilities provide a foundation to accelerate the development of next-generation solutions to tackle the most pressing challenges we face in the next decades.- Contact:
