A Monthly Message from the Dean

May 15, 2025

Dear UChicago PME Community,

At the UChicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, we often speak about discovery — of new methods to store energy, provide clean water, improve health, and unlock the potential of quantum devices. But discovery alone is not enough. At its heart, engineering is about solving real problems for real people.

This is where translation and entrepreneurship become essential. Our students and faculty are not only inventors but founders, driven to translate ideas into companies, and solutions into societal benefit. Importantly, UChicago PME researchers make up just 2% of the University’s tenure-track and clinical faculty, yet they accounted for 45% of all provisional patents filed in 2024 at the University. The numbers illustrate UChicago PME’s impressive impact.

As one example, memQ, a quantum startup grounded in UChicago PME talent, is creating solutions to transform quantum networks and connectivity—strengthening the security of America’s financial systems, elections, and more. Signl, co-founded by PME faculty and alumni, is pioneering methods to improve the safety and efficacy of immunizations. Rise Reforming, created by UChicago PME students, is taking plastic directly from retailers and manufacturers and repurposing it, eliminating plastic waste for a sustainable and profitable business future.

In fact, just last week, the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation shared that of the 21 teams seeking to address real-world challenges through its I-Corps program, nine of the teams included our students.

Today, UChicago PME boasts more than ten emerging startups—each focused on solving real-world challenges that affect everyday Americans. These ventures generate jobs, stimulate the economy, and bring vital technologies into the marketplace, fueling innovation across the Midwest and the country.

That leads me to another exciting announcement – we are thrilled to showcase this spirit of entrepreneurship at our upcoming Convocation in June, where we will welcome University trustee and Chicago Booth alum Michael Polsky, MBA ’87, as our featured speaker. A pioneer in both business and innovation, Mr. Polsky exemplifies the approach we seek to instill in our students: courage, creativity, and a deep commitment to positive public impact.

Whether through scientific discovery, company creation, or community collaboration, UChicago PME students, postdocs, alumni, faculty, staff, and partners are working to shape a better, more resilient future for all Americans. This entrepreneurial drive is helping translate our discoveries into reality—one venture, one breakthrough, and one bold idea at a time.

Warm regards,

Nadya Mason
