A Monthly Message from the Dean

April 10, 2025

Dear PME Community,

We often highlight the accomplishments of our graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, but undergraduate students are equally essential to the fabric of UChicago PME.

Since our very first undergraduate major in 2015, our numbers have grown exponentially, with the current cohort at more than 165 majors and minors studying molecular engineering. These students excel in a unique, interdisciplinary curriculum that teaches them to think like engineers and develop hands-on solutions to problems.

In our classrooms and labs, undergraduates exemplify the power of experiential learning. As part of our Engineering Design capstone course, Molecular Engineering majors design real-world products—from bioreactors to heat pump clothes dryers—under the guidance of industry mentors. This hands-on course reflects our educational model—rigorous, interdisciplinary, and grounded in real-world impact.

Undergraduates also bring an eagerness to engage in meaningful research that never fails to inspire me. A striking example comes from UChicago PME’s High Lab, which, in collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory, has discovered a novel way to bond diamonds to materials compatible with both quantum and conventional electronics. That team—including undergraduate Avery Linder—has recently been selected as a finalist for the Spring 2025 George Shultz Innovation Fund for its efforts to scale this quantum technology.

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of meeting with our current cohort of Pritzker Scholars, and it was also clear to me that the wide range of opportunities at UChicago PME is a key part of what draws students here.

Outside the classroom and lab, students engage through clubs such as the UChicago Quantum Society, the Society of Molecular Engineers, Combat Robotics, and a new Formula SAE team. These clubs build knowledge, skills, teamwork, and community – and are apparently also a lot of fun!

I am proud that we support student growth, engagement, and learning across all levels at UChicago PME. By investing in our students, we invest in the best of our shared future.

Warm regards,

Nadya Mason

Dean, UChicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering
