Hyde Park Labs

An open house is available exclusively for the UChicago PME community on April 16, from 4:00 p.m. through 6:00 PM. Visitors can view UChicago PME’s brand new sixth-floor Materials space at Hyde Park Labs! Brief remarks will be given at 4:30 PM, with light refreshments served.  T-shirts will be given to the first 100 visitors, while supplies last.

A complimentary shuttle will begin taking UChicago PME visitors to the Hype Park Labs open house at 3:30 PM. Please meet in the lobby of WERC by the front doors. Shuttles will then operate approximately every 15 minutes from the front of WERC on Ellis Avenue to Hyde Park Labs in a loop, with the final shuttle expected to depart Hyde Park Labs at 6:30 PM back to WERC.

The UChicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering is expanding to Hyde Park Labs.

Welcome to Hyde Park Labs, a 300,000-square-foot hub for cross-disciplinary discovery!

This spring, UChicago PME’s newest materials research labs and the Energy Transition Network will join an ecosystem that includes the UChicago Science Incubator, IBM’s Quantum System Two, and the Therapeutics Discovery Institute.

This expansion strengthens collaboration across UChicago PME’s Institute for Materials and Sustainability, and advances research in energy storage, climate resilience, AI, and more.

Hyde Park Labs is located at 5207 S Harper Ave, Chicago, IL.

The University of Chicago community has various free options to get to Hyde Park Labs from the main UChicago campus. Visit the Safety and Security website to see all available options. UGo 53rd Street Express (daytime shuttle)

  • Runs every 15–30 minutes, Mon-Fri, from 7 AM to 6 PM
  • Nearby stops to WERC include 57th St and Ellis Ave or 55th St and Ellis Ave
  • Disembark at Harper Court (53rd/Lake Park)
  • The average travel time is 10–15 minutes

Downtown Campus Connector (daytime shuttle)

  • Runs every 25 minutes, Mon-Fri, 6:30 AM to 10 PM
  • Nearby stops to WERC include S Maryland Ave and E 59th St or S Woodlawn Ave and E 59th St
  • Disembark at 53rd Street
  • The average travel time is 10–15 minutes

NightRide East Route (nighttime shuttle)

  • Runs every 15–30 minutes, every day, from 4 PM to 9 PM
  • The nearest stop to WERC is 57th St and Hull Gate
  • Disembark at Harper Court (53rd/Harper Court)
  • The average travel time is 15–25 minutes

Regents Express (nighttime shuttle)

  • Runs every 30 minutes, Mon-Fri, from 5:20 PM to 9 PM
  • The last run of the Regents Express leaves from Law School at 8:40 PM
  • The nearest stop to WERC is 56th St and Ellis Ave
  • Disembark at E Hyde Park Blvd and S East End Ave
  • The average travel time is 15–25 minutes

CTA Buses: #171 and #172

  • Buses run most days from 8 AM to 6 PM
  • The nearest stop to WERC is 57th St and Ellis Ave (southbound). Travelers can also catch the #171 at University and 57th (northbound) or the #172 at Woodlawn and 57th (northbound).
  • Planned stops at 57th and Ellis every 15 minutes, but please check the bus tracker for up-to-the-minute stop times
  • For #171, disembark at S. Hyde Park Blvd and 53rd St
  • For #172, disembark at Hyde Park and Lake Park (Metra) or Hyde Park and Blackstone
  • The average travel time is 15 to 20 minutes

Alternate routes

  • Visitors can take the Metra Electric to reach Hyde Park Labs by disembarking at the 51st-53rd Street Station. Additional information is available on the Safety and Security website.

Walking

  • Map to 5207 S Harper Ave, Chicago, IL. Getting to Hyde Park Labs by foot from the William Eckhardt Research Center is approximately 1.1 miles, or a 25-minute walk.

Paid Options - Scooters, Bikes or Parking

  • Paid options for visitors include rideshares, bikes, scooters, or parking at Hyde Park Labs. Parking options include garage parking at Harper Court (5222 S Lake Park Ave) which is $13.99+, or street parking nearby, such as 55th street, which is typically $4-$5 for 2 hours.

The 53rd Street corridor, where Hyde Park Labs is located, is a busy commercial area. Safety measures include UCPD patrols and emergency phones. UCPD also offers an accompaniment service around the clock. Please consult with your PI about any concerns.
