The UNLEARN Workshop & Educational Series is a program designed to strengthen campus culture by addressing the behavioral and cultural dynamics that shape belonging, inclusion, and free expression in academic environments. While institutions often express commitments to both diversity and free inquiry, everyday interactions, cultural norms, and power dynamics can limit full participation, particularly for individuals from historically marginalized communities.
The UNLEARN Series will provide structured learning spaces for faculty, students, postdoctoral scholars, and professional staff to engage in guided reflection, facilitated dialogue, and scenario-based exercises. Through this work, participants will examine how socialization, bias, and institutional norms influence communication and behavior, while building practical tools to support a more inclusive climate and sustain open, rigorous academic exchange.
The program will feature four progressive sessions focused on belonging and inclusive culture, bias awareness and interruption, conflict navigation and voice, and inclusive leadership and accountability.
The series will run over four weeks beginning Wednesday, May 13, and will be open to the entire University of Chicago community.
